Twitter 101

Note: in August 2008 Twitter stopped the ability to send SMS messages in Europe, citing an inability to strike a deal with mobile operators to share costs/revenue. 1) Sign Up to Twitter

• Go to http://www.twitter.com
• Click on Get Started - Join button.
• Enter a Username & Password & Email Address.
• Once your account has been created you need to tell Twitter your phone number so they can send you SMS messages. Click on Settings at the top. (Twitter has an excellent help page: here.
• Now click on Devices and type your mobile phone into the box provided.

Instead of the zero at the start you will need to begin your number with a + followed by the country dialling code (for example +44 in the UK or +1 for the USA or +34 for Spain). You will then be given a set of random letters that you have to send by text message to Twitter (+447624801423 in the UK or ).

• Wait for a text reply to your phone from Twitter, while waiting navigate away from Devices.
• Once you get the reply from Twitter save the Twitter number to your phone, this is the number you'll use if you ever send goal news and results to Twitter.
• Go back to the Devices tab and make sure Device updates is set to ON.

Now you need to check the EUFC Twitter rota to see who you should follow to get the goals sent to your mobile phone.

If you want to send twits from a match here are some top tips:

1) Save the Twitter phone number to your phone's contacts during the Sign Up process so you are ready to go.

2) It helps followers to send a message to Twitter to confirm your arrival at the ground and let everyone knows it's working.

3) As well as goal flashes also try and confirm half time and full time results.

4) Keep your goal and results messages brief. Something along the lines of...

Bodmin 1 - 0 Ebbsfleet

Bodmin 1 - 0 Ebbsfleet (HT)

Bodmin 1 - 1 Ebbsfleet (Echanomi)

Bodmin 1 - 2 Ebbsfleet (Pooley 79')

Bodmin 1 - 2 Ebbsfleet (FT) Goals: Echanomi 34', Pooley 79'

5) Before the game save Twitter as A Twitter AAA Twitter in your phone book so that it appears at the very top of your phone's contact list, this makes it easier to find so it is quicker to send those all important goal flashes.

6) Set up messages in anticipation of an Ebbsfleet goal:

Bodmin 0 - 1 Ebbsfleet

Push send and select Twitter from your phone book.. that way you are ready to send the goal flash with one click of your thumb! In the (unlikely) event of the opposition scoring first then you just go back and edit the message before sending it. But nobody minds if bad news is a few seconds late.
