[edit] Notes from the terraces:

A non-league Victor Anichebe (the Everton inexperienced Yakubu) - Quincel

This boy has got something - a bit of Heskey, a touch of Viduka , control and pace. Just needs a bit of 'devil' and some anticipation and/or he confidence to gamble occasionally, but REAL potential. - Molinerd

Just gets better and better and better. He has real pace, is very strong (and will only get stronger as he matures) and scores goals. Has to be the find of the season.

My only fear is that he is getting so much praise and has become the focal point of the team, this is a lot to put on the shoulders of one so young. He seems to be coping with this and while he is playing like this the world is his oyster. - Gaspode

Looked great and Wembley and has impressed me any time I've watched him play. A player who obviously has a few rough edges to chisel off, but all the greats have had that. Talk of a possible move to Millwall, which may not be a perfect move for him, I've no doubt he'll make it though. Reminds me very much of Chris Iwelumo when he was a young player at Saint Mirren. - ManicScot

[edit] Scouting Reports:

John Akinde vs. Cambridge United - Monday 24th March 2008, 19:45

John looked sharp from the off, winning the majority of 50-50 challenges and reaching every loose ball first. His hold up play was exceptional, allowing the likes of Michael Bostwick and Stacy Long to get forward and join the attack. His passing was fantastic, releasing other players and ensuring the team kept possession. Through lack of opportunities, he was fairly anonymous in terms of clear cut chances, until the 26th minute where a well timed run left him through on goal and one-on-one with Cambridge stopper Danny Potter. Potter brought him down and was subsequently red-carded. The penalty was then converted by Chris McPhee. Ironically, it was a poor second touch from John which lead to the penalty incident.

In the second half, John seemed to fade a little as the Cambridge defence tightened their marking. Despite his strong frame, he lost possession without much resistance and struggled to hold off aerial challenges. A prime example of this came in the 56th minute when after a long spell of attacking Ebbsfleet possession, a scramble in the box resulted in the ball falling to John, who, under pressure from a defender, could only volley the ball straight into the arms of stand-in goalkeeper Peters. However he made amends for the wasted chance on 65 minutes when another goalmouth fracas left him with the goal at his mercy, and he made no mistake in finding the back of the net with his left footed strike from 9 yards. That was his 8th goal of the season so far. John’s game was over after 70 minutes when he hobbled off with what looked like a minor ankle injury, and was replaced by Rafael Nade who was largely anonymous for the last 20 minutes.

The injury wasn’t at all serious however, as John could be seen joking on the substitutes bench towards the end of the game.

John was played in his favoured position of Centre Forward His main abilities are his and quick feet and eye for a pass He has the potential to become a major threat to defences at this level and possibly higher He is a determined character, driven by his will to succeed His main strengths are his use of height and body mass His only weakness at the moment is consistency; once he realised quite how to use his body frame to his advantage, he’ll be unstoppable in this league.
