Jaiku is a utility which allows people to update their current status, to answer the question "what are you doing now?". Short messages can be sent either from the Jaiku website, or from any mobile phone via an SMS message. People who are interested in what you are doing can "follow" you and will receive updates on their mobiles.

Jaiku Example

Because messages can be up to 140 characters long, they can be used almost as a mini blogs or chat. They can be announced to the world in general or as a public reply to someone else's update. The only costs are the SMS text messages that you send to Jaiku. Clearly if you have a monthly allowance, this shouldn't be a problem, but is worth remembering before you get carried away.

Jaiku allows you to protect your privacy (and sanity) in several ways:

  • You can by opting to have your comments appear on a global public timeline or just your approved followers.
  • You can be selective about who you want to recieve updates from
  • You can turn Jaiku options off or on via a SMS messages
    • These messages will still appear on your Jaiku page to view at your leisure.

Match Updates

Someone who is at the game or listening on the radio can send updates with goals, cards, half time, full time scores etc. These are sent to the #ebbsfleet channel, which can be found here. Everyone who subscribes to those channels will receive the update.

Additional match chat can be sent to the #fleetchat channel.

Check out the EUFC Jaiku rota page to see who has signed up to provide commentary live from the match, or sign up for a particular game.

Getting started

Unfortunately at the moment you need an invite to join Jaiku.

To get an invitation sent to you, please email matchupdates@myfootballclub.co.uk with 'Invite Request' in the subject line. You will then receive one email from the Match Update Team containing instructions followed by another email from Jaiku with the invitation itself.

  • Register your mobile number
  • Check your settings, especially notifications / privacy.
  • Join the #ebbsfleet and #fleetchat channels
  • Save the Jaiku number, which is where you will send your comments and updates
  • Add #ebbsfleet or #fleetchat at the start of each message you want to send to the channel.
