Help:Editing

Editing the wiki is quite simple:

  • Register your account
  • Go to a page you want to edit
  • Click on the "edit" tab at the top to edit the whole page
  • Click on the "edit" link for a particular section of the page

[edit] Hey, this looks like Wikipedia!

It sure does, that's because the clever people that developed Wikipedia released the back-end application for people to use locally. Editing is done the same way. What this means is that you can have a look to see how pages are formatted on Wikipedia, and apply those styles here.

There is a simple markup language which allows you to change the layout of the page, add links etc. Links between articles are what make Wikis so powerful and usable.

[edit] Getting Started

To create a new page, first check that there isn't one that already exists, or something similar, by using the search bar on the left menu. You may find that your new content fits better within an existing page, or that someone has created a "stub" as a placeholder. Stubs are sometimes put in place as a way of saying "this bit of information is useful, but needs fleshing out".

As much as possible, link your page to other articles, and cite external references, such as newspaper articles or forum threads.

You can (and should) preview a page before you commit to publication.

[edit] History & Discussion

All pages have a history tab, which allows you to see who has been making changes to a page, and also see the differences between versions. When you save a page, you should add a comment to say what changes you have made.

Proposed layout and content for a page can also be discussed, e.g. someone might suggest a page is getting too long and needs splitting.

[edit] Signing your edits

Remember to sign your edits when posting comments and certain things on pages.

The conventions used to sign edits on this wiki are the following.

  • Sign with one of the two following markup:
    • --~~~~ that's two dashes followed by four tilde signs. The four tildes converts to a link to your user page followed by a time stamp.
    • --~~~ that's two dashes followed by three tilde signs. The same as the above, but without the time stamp.
  • You can put a space between the second dash and the first tilde if you like. (I tend to do that by old habit.)
  • If your contribution doesn't extend one paragraph, sign at the end of the same line as your text.
  • If your contribution does extend one paragraph, sign two lines below your text.

Like so:

One paragraph of Ebbsfleet knowledge. -- ~~~

Two paragraphs of Ebbsfleet knowledge

-- ~~~

Which will render like so (when I'm the editor):

One paragraph of Ebbsfleet knowledge. -- KaiQom

Two paragraphs of

Ebbsfleet knowledge

-- KaiQom

Time stamped signatures look like so --KaiQom 10:06, 8 July 2008 (PDT)

[edit] Standards & Templates

It's important to have a consistent look and feel across the wiki so that information is quickly located when reading. We are still developing standards for pages, (e.g. references and citations), as well as templates for information boxes that can be used across similar pages (e.g. a standard player profile info box).

Links to these will appear here.

[edit] Practice editing in the Sandbox

You can prepare an article and play about with formatting in a section called the Sandbox. To do this, search for a page called Sandbox:Foobar (replace Foobar with whatever you like). Hopefully this page won't exist and you will be given the option to create the page. You can then experiment with text layouts, links etc. But don't be afraid to add content and then ask for help tiyding up the formatting.

Here's an example: Sandbox:Editing

[edit] Recent Changes

All new pages and changes to existing pages appear here. This is a good way of finding out who regularly edits a particular page, and for finding new pages to link to and from. This makes your content more relevant in a wider context.. You can also keep your eye on this to check for spam or malicious edits and reverse these.
