The Premiership is the highest division of the English league system. It is contested by 20 professional clubs and comes under the jurisdiction of the English FA.

The Football League is a league competition contested by 72 professional clubs from England and Wales. The Football League is divided in three separate leagues of 24 teams; the Championship, League One and League Two. The Football League comes under the jurisdiction of the English FA.

[edit] The National League

The National League is made up of the seven levels directly below the Football League. It is contested by 1,600+ professional, semi-professional and amateur clubs divided into 91 separate leagues. The top level of the National League is the Conference National (level 5), currently known as the Blue Square Premier division.

Teams from the Conference National are from across England but all levels below, starting at Conference North and Conference South, are regionalised (this is so that teams do not have to travel as far to away games).

The National League comes under the jurisdiction of the English FA.
